Mini Abdominoplasty

Mini abdominoplasty removes a limited amount of excess skin and fat from the lower abdomen, below the navel, through a shorter incision than a full abdominoplasty. The navel is usually not repositioned.

It suits patients whose concern is confined to the area below the navel, with reasonable skin tone and little or no separation of the abdominal muscles above the navel. It is not a substitute for a full abdominoplasty where laxity extends higher.

What it can improve

• Loose skin and a small bulge below the navel
• A limited lower-abdominal contour
• Minor laxity after pregnancy or modest weight change

It does not address skin or muscle laxity above the navel, does not treat significant muscle separation, and does not remove fat from the whole abdomen on its own.

During the procedure

Excess lower-abdominal skin and fat are removed through a low, horizontal incision placed where underwear can cover it, and the remaining skin is redraped for a smoother contour.

After the procedure

Swelling, tightness, and a pulling sensation are normal. A compression garment is worn, walking slightly bent forward is common early on, and activity is increased gradually under guidance.

Results: what it can and cannot achieve

A smoother lower abdomen with a low, concealable scar is achievable. It cannot correct upper-abdominal laxity or significant muscle separation, and weight change or pregnancy afterward can alter the result. The scar is permanent and fades over time.

Possible risks and complications

All surgery carries risks. Possible risks include:

• Bleeding or hematoma
• Infection
• Fluid collection (seroma)
• Delayed wound healing
• Changes in skin sensation
• Visible or widened scarring
• Blood clots

Smoking and impaired circulation raise the risk of healing problems and wound complications, so honest assessment and smoking cessation are essential.

Mini abdominoplasty may suit patients with isolated lower-abdominal laxity. It is especially suitable for patients who:

• Have loose skin or a small bulge confined below the navel
• Have little or no muscle separation above the navel
• Are close to a stable weight
• Are in good general health with realistic expectations
• Do not smoke or can stop before and after surgery

It may not suit patients with laxity above the navel or significant muscle separation, who are usually better served by a full abdominoplasty. Your surgeon advises on the right option.
