What it is

Gender-affirming rhinoplasty reshapes the nose to help the face better reflect how you wish to be seen. Feminizing changes often soften and refine the bridge and tip, while masculinizing changes often support a straighter, stronger profile. The plan is always made in harmony with the rest of the face.

Rhinoplasty is one of the most technically demanding facial procedures. The nose is reshaped through small incisions, adjusting bone and cartilage, and the result depends on both the surgery and how the skin heals over the new framework. Healing is gradual and the final shape takes time to emerge.

What it can improve

  • Bridge profile, height, and width
  • Tip shape, definition, and rotation
  • Overall balance of the nose with the face
  • Support for a more feminine or masculine appearance

It cannot create a nose unrelated to your underlying anatomy and skin, and very thick or very thin skin can limit refinement. It does not change other facial bones.

Quick facts

  • Procedure time: 2–3 hours
  • Anesthesia: General anesthesia
  • Clinic stay: Same-day or short stay
  • Recovery: Around 1–2 weeks before social activity, with a splint for about 1 week
  • Exercise: Strenuous activity from about 4–6 weeks
  • Final result: Refines over 12–18 months as swelling resolves

Before the procedure

You will receive individualized instructions covering medication, supplements, smoking, alcohol, and fasting. Desired changes and realistic outcomes are planned together, with attention to facial harmony, and timing within your wider care is discussed.

During the procedure

Through small incisions, the bone and cartilage are carefully reshaped to refine or strengthen the nose as planned. A splint supports the new shape during early healing.

After the procedure

Swelling and bruising around the nose and eyes are normal and settle over the first weeks. The splint is removed at about a week. The tip is the last area to refine, and the final shape continues to emerge over twelve to eighteen months.

Results: what it can and cannot achieve

A nose that better supports your desired appearance and sits in harmony with your face is achievable. Rhinoplasty cannot promise a precise predetermined shape, since healing varies, and a small number of patients choose minor revision once healing is complete. Your surgeon explains what your anatomy allows.

Possible risks and complications

Rhinoplasty is generally safe in experienced hands, but all surgery carries risks. Possible risks include:

  • Swelling and bruising, which can be prolonged at the tip
  • Temporary or, rarely, lasting changes in breathing
  • Asymmetry or minor contour irregularity
  • Changes in skin sensation over the nose
  • Unpredictable healing that may lead to revision
  • Bleeding or infection

Smoking and impaired circulation raise the risk of healing problems and wound complications, so honest assessment and smoking cessation are essential.

Who it suits

Gender-affirming rhinoplasty may suit individuals who want their nose to support a more feminine or masculine appearance. It is especially suitable for those who:

  • Want refinement of the nose in harmony with the face
  • Are in good general health with realistic expectations
  • Understand healing and final shape take time
  • Have considered timing within their wider care
  • Do not smoke or can stop before and after surgery

It may not suit those expecting an exact predetermined result regardless of anatomy, or those with health factors that increase surgical risk. Eligibility and timing are assessed individually.

Frequently Asked Questions

How is technique tailored to my desired appearance?

Technique is chosen to achieve your desired aesthetic, whether that means a softer, more delicate shape or a stronger, more defined profile.

Can breathing problems be addressed at the same time?

Yes, if you also have breathing difficulties, septum surgery can be combined at the same time for both form and function.

What do I need to wear after the procedure?

A nasal cast is worn for about a week, with bruising around the eyes usually settling within the same timeframe.

When do I see the final result?

The nose continues to change subtly during the first year, so the final result is best judged after 12 months.
