Lipoedema is often mistaken for being overweight, but it is a chronic condition that does not respond to diet and exercise. For many, the realisation comes only after years of unexplained symptoms.
Lipoedema involves an abnormal accumulation of fatty tissue, usually symmetrically in the legs and arms. It can cause pain, a feeling of heaviness and a tendency to bruise. The condition is hormonally linked and mainly affects women.
Unlike ordinary fat, lipoedema fat is not noticeably affected by diet and exercise. This is one of the reasons the condition is often misunderstood, both by those around the patient and within healthcare. Getting a correct assessment is an important first step.
When a patient finally hears that her symptoms have a name, and that it is not her fault, that is often a relief in itself. From there, we can begin to plan.
In cases of pronounced symptoms, a gentle form of liposuction can remove the diseased fatty tissue. The aim is primarily to relieve pain and heaviness and improve mobility, rather than to achieve a cosmetic change. Results vary from person to person.
The treatment is planned individually based on your symptoms and your situation. If this sounds familiar, you are welcome to book a consultation and we will go through what could help you.
When you are ready to bring your questions into a conversation, the first consultation is the place to do it. Tell us what you are considering, and we will tell you honestly what is possible.
