What does a DIEP flap involve?

In a DIEP flap, skin and fat are moved from the lower abdomen to the breast, with the blood supply maintained through microsurgery. No muscle is sacrificed, which sets the technique apart from older methods. The result is a breast made of your own, living tissue.

Why do some choose their own tissue over implants?

Your own tissue ages with the body and often feels natural, both in shape and consistency. It can be particularly relevant after radiotherapy, when tissue needs to be added from elsewhere. At the same time, implants can be the right path for others. The choice is always individual.

Reconstruction is not just about recreating a shape. It is about helping someone feel whole again, at their own pace.

What does the process look like?

Reconstruction often takes place in several stages. Once the shape has been created, minor adjustments can be made for symmetry, and as a final step the areola can be recreated with medical pigmentation. Throughout, you are followed by the same surgeon.
